Brave Commons seeks to elevate the voices of LGBTQ+ students working within and beyond Christian universities in the United States. Brave Commons is an intersectional, queer and POC-led, Christian organization seeking to provoke a movement of faith and justice in the academy and beyond. Through retreats, spiritual support, and advocacy resourcing, Brave Commons works to provide equitable and holistic faith engagement for all.

Our Story

Brave Commons started as a a wild dream born from sleepless nights, anxious rants, and hope filled visions of what a world full of love, joy, justice, and flourishing might look like. Brave Commons was birthed out of a desire to experience the loving and queering grace of the Living God who has drawn near to the most marginalized and forgotten.

With an intersectional, ancestral, contemplative activist vision of renewing our world, and curating an authentic experience of the Divine for students and young folk everywhere, Brave Commons intends to raise the dialogue of justice to the forefront. We will continue to labor in love and hope, speaking truth to power, creating spaces and atmospheres of deep healing, and advocating for good and right change for this generation and the next.

After its founding in 2017 by Michael Vazquez, the unicorn spirit of Brave Commons soon found Erin Green and Lauren Ileana Sotolongo, who then joined the movement as Co-Executive Directors. Each leads a distinct region of the United States, and carries this founding spirit of love and justice with them in the continued work of liberation today.
